Argentina ends missing sub rescue mission

The Argentine navy has said it has abandoned attempts to rescue 44 crew members on board a submarine that disappeared two weeks ago.
"Despite the magnitude of the efforts made, it has not been possible to locate the submarine," navy spokesman Enrique Balbi said on Thursday.
The, sub, the ARA San Juan, last made contact on Wednesday 15 November.
Hopes of finding survivors faded after a suspected explosion was reported near its last-known location.
Capt Balbi said the search for the submarine had been "extended to more than double the number of days that determine the possibilities of rescuing the crew", but added that teams would continue to search for the vessel on the seabed.
On Tuesday, Capt Balbi told reporters that water had entered the submarine's snorkel, which can be used to take in air from above the surface when the submarine is submerged.
The saltwater dripped onto a battery tray in the prow, causing the battery to short circuit and to smoulder, he said.
An international search mission saw the deployment of 4,000 personnel from more than a dozen countries.
The Argentine navy's last contact with the vessel was at approximately 07:30 (10:30 GMT) on 15 November, at which point its captain had reportedly confirmed that the crew were well.
Eight days after the sub vanished, the Vienna-based Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organisation said that it had detected a noise a few hours after the sub's last contact.
The body, which operates a network of listening posts to monitor nuclear explosions, said that there had been a "hydro-acoustic anomaly" about 30 nautical miles (60km) north of the sub's last-known position at 10:31 (13:31 GMT).
The Argentine navy said it could have been the sound of the submarine imploding - news which hit relatives of the missing crew members hard.

Indian surgeons remove 263 coins, 100 nails from man's stomach

Indian surgeons remove 263 coins, 100 nails from man's stomach.
New Delhi  (CNN) - A man who went to the doctor in India complaining of abdominal pain was found to have nearly 12 pounds of metal objects in his stomach.
Maksood Khan, 28, a rickshaw driver from Satna district in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, was admitted to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital on November 19.
Doctors initially believed he was suffering from food poisoning, until tests revealed the contents of his stomach.
"He had been complaining of the pain for the last one month. After the general examination, we found that he had an infection in the abdomen and low blood pressure, he was in a critical condition," Dr. Priyank Sharma, who led the surgery, told CNN.
They soon discovered that the cause of his pain was far more serious.
"We had suspicions that there was something else because his family had expressed doubts that he was consuming unnatural, abnormal things. So, we did an X-ray and ultrasound of the abdomen," he added.
The scans revealed the presence of multiple metal objects in his stomach ranging from coins to razor blades.
Khan underwent surgery on November 24 to remove the objects, during which a laparoscope was used to find them all.
"We discovered in his stomach nut bolts, chains, 263 coins and around 100 nails. The surgery took three hours to perform," Dr. APS Gaharwal, head of the general surgery department, told CNN.
"Post operatively, he was in a critical condition for 24 hours and was on ventilator support. Now he's out of danger but he will need some time for his stomach to recover," said Sharma. "There are still two to three coins in his rectum that will pass naturally."
After looking at post-operative X-rays, surgeons believe everything else has been removed.
A mental health issue
After speaking to Khan's family, doctors believe his unusual behavior could be caused by depression.
"This is a mental illness. Our psychiatry department also found that he might be in depression," said Sharma, adding that the man would receive further treatment.
Khan is expected to fully recover without any long-term damage.
In 2016, a 42-year-old man in the northern city of Amritsar in the state of Punjab was operated on after he spent two months swallowing knives. Forty knives were surgically removed from his stomach after doctors spent almost two days forming a diagnosis and surgery plan.
The man was believed to have had a rare mental disorder. The patient told doctors that he had no idea why he started eating knives but that he "developed a taste for metal" and "loved the way blades tasted."

Breaking: Yemen’s Huthi rebels hit Saudi with second missile

Yemen’s Iran-backed Huthi rebels said Thursday they successfully  fired a ballistic missile at Saudi Arabia and hit a military target.
It was the second such attack this month, after threatening to retaliate over a crippling blockade.
“We confirm the success of our ballistic missile trial, which hit its military target inside Saudi Arabia,” the Huthi-run Al-Masira television channel said.
A spokesman for the Saudi-led military coalition fighting the Huthis in Yemen did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Earlier, rebel chief Abdulmalik al-Huthi warned against “prolonging the blockade” imposed on Yemen following a November 4 Huthi missile attack that was intercepted near Riyadh international airport.
“Should the blockade continue, we know what (targets) would cause great pain and how to reach them,” he said in a speech broadcast on Al-Masira television.
Yemen’s war has claimed more than 8,600 lives since the Saudi-led coalition joined the government’s war against the Huthi rebel alliance.
The country, long the poorest in the region, now faces the threat of famine as it struggles to get food and medicine through its ports.
Saudi Arabia and its allies tightened the longstanding blockade on Yemen’s ports and the main international airport in Sanaa in the wake of the November 4 missile attack.

PDP ratifies plans for elective National Convention

The National Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has ratified its plans for the conduct of the party’s National Convention on December 9.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Dayo Adeyeye, who briefed journalists on Thursday, disclosed this while highlighting the major decisions made at the 77th NEC meeting held at the PDP National Secretariat, Abuja.
He said the National Caretaker Committee of the party submitted reports on the just concluded congresses in the states.
Recalling that the party in its last convention on August 12 decided to dissolve the executive committees in some states and elect replacements, he said this had been done except in Osun State.
The affected states are Lagos, Ogun, Adamawa, Anambra, Kwara, Borno, Kebbi, Kogi and Oyo.
He said over 2800 delegates, consisting special and statutory delegates, are expected to participate at the convention.
Mr. Adeyeye said the NEC approved the composition of the Convention Planning Committee and the amended guidelines for the convention but refused to disclose the names of the committee members till they are published.
He said from the discussions and deliberations at the meeting, he was confident that no member of the party would contemplate holding a parallel convention.
The PDP spokesperson also emphasised the commitment of the caretaker committee to organise a free, fair and credible national convention.
He said during the NEC meeting, aspirants were admonished to be civil in their campaigns, and avoid attacking each other, noting that nobody’s ambition is more important than the party and that after the elective convention they will still come back as party members.
“We are going to organise a free, fair and credible party convention. Nigerians still believes in the PDP,” he said.
“Nobody will have any issue. We are not under any threat that there will be a parallel convention. We are optimistic that we are going to have a successful Convention by the grace of God,” he said.
Earlier, the chairman of the NCC, Ahmed Makarfi, commended the NEC for standing by the committee in the past 18 months.
Mr. Makarfi also urged the aspirants to conduct themselves with decorum and see the convention as a family affair and not a do or die situation.
He said there was need for the party to remain united.
“United we stand, divided we fall. PDP is like Nigeria. It is a diverse political party but it is a united party. What you don’t get today, you will get tomorrow. That is how life is,” Mr. Makarfi said.
The Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dakwambo, who spoke on behalf of the party’s governors, pledged their support for the caretaker committee to conduct the convention.
“PDP Governors are solidly working with the Caretaker Committee and all relevant stakeholders to ensure a free, fair and successful convention,” he said.
The Deputy Senate President,Ike Ekweremadu, also urged the aspirants to various positions to avoid making trouble if the outcome of the convention does not favour them.
“The least we can do in our convention is to be transparent. I assure that we will do everything possible to ensure that the convention is free and fair and transparent. I want to appeal to those who may not succeed and may want to disrupt the party. Those people may be the ultimate victims.”
Shortly before the NEC meeting went into a closed door session, a minute silence was observed in honour of former vice president, Alex Ekwueme.
Mr. Ekwueme, who passed on recently in a London Clinic, was the founding national chairman of the party.
Absent at the meeting were Chairman, PDP Governors Forum and governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose; his Ebonyi State counterpart, David Umahi; Governor of Cross River State, Ben Ayade; Governor Ishaku Darius of Taraba State and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State.
In attendance were Governors Ibrahim Dakwambo, Nyesom Wike, Emmanuel Udom and Ifeanyi Okowa of Gombe, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Delta states respectively.
Governor of Bayelsa State, Serieke Dickson; and the Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu; were represented by their deputies.
Others prominent persons in attendance were former Senate President David Mark; former PDP chairmen, Vincent Ogbulafor, Ahmadu Ali, Okwesilieze Nwodo among others.

“To hell with restructuring” – Governor Shettima

The Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, on Thursday downplayed the clamour for restructuring in Nigeria, describing it as a “madness” that can be stopped by good governance.
Mr. Shettima spoke at the book launch of a former Minister of Youths and Sports Development under the Goodluck Jonathan administration, Bolaji Abdullahi, who is now the spokesperson of the All Progressive Congress, APC.
The event took place at the Yar’Adua Centre in the Central Business District of Abuja.
The book titled “On a Platter of Gold” was written on how Mr. Jonathan became president of Nigeria in 2011 but lost the office at the 2015 general election.
Mr. Shettima, who was the Father of the Day, dismissed the clamour for restructuring, saying “To hell with restructuring.”
According to the governor, if jobs are provided and other sectors of the economy, especially the education sector is developed, “this madness”, referring to restructuring, “will stop.”
“People are talking about artificial intelligence, other nations are talking about nano technology or robotics engineering but unfortunately, the topical issue in Nigeria is restructuring. Restructuring my foot! To hell with restructuring.
“Let us improve on governance, let us work for the people, invest in education, create jobs for our people, this madness will stop,” the governor said.
Several Nigerians including ethnic organisations like the Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the Afenifere have demanded restructuring of Nigeria, saying it was the way to resolve many of the challenges facing the country.
Based on the clamour, Mr. Shettima’s party, APC, set up a committee to review the various restructuring calls.
Mr. Shettima, who described Mr. Jonathan as an honest man, said it was the people he surrounded himself with that made his government fail.
“Comparing (former President Olusegun) Obasanjo and the people he worked with and those Jonathan worked with, you will understand why.
“If you look at Obasanjo, hate him or love him, you have to respect Obasanjo for not only believing in the Nigerian project, but for surrounding himself with men of quality.
“If you mention Obasanjo, the names that readily come to mind are those of Oby Ezekwesili, Aliko Dangote, Femi Otedola, Jim Ovia, Tony Elumelu, Nasiru el-Rufai, Nuhu Ribadu, Bukola Saraki and other quality Nigerians who have the capacity to add value to the system.
“But when you think of President Jonathan, with all due respect, he surrounded himself with an assorted crop of religious bigots, tribal kindred and all sorts of reactionary elements. Ateke Tom, Government Tompolo, Late Oronto Douglas, Asari Dokubo, Edwin Clark, Ayo Oritsejafor and others.”

Mainagate : Drama as Perm Sec takes responsibility for reinstatement

The Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Interior, Engineer Abubakar
Magaji, on Thursday owned up to all the administrative lapses leading to the “erroneous reinstatement and promotion of Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reform.
Magaji, stated this while anwsering  questions directed at him by members of the House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee investigating the circumstances surrounding the disappearance, reappearance, reinstatement and promotion of Mr. Maina,
The Permanent  secretary had earlier  indicted the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita, as being responsible for the letter directing Maina’s reinstatement.
However, Oyo-Ita in her submision  before the panel marveled at the new stand  by the Permanent Secretary whom she described as “a senior permanent secretary in the civil
Oyo-Ita therefore declared before that  Maina  remained dismissed from the civil service as far as the rules and her office were concerned.
Speaking ont he alleged  looted assets under the economic and Financial Crimes Commision (EFCC), the acting chairman, Ibrahim Magu told the panel that Maina never hand over any asset to the commission, Adding that assets in EFCC custody are those recovered by the Commission in the course of its own investigation of pension thieves including Maina himself.
Magu argued that the only link between the EFCC and Maina task team was the participation of a few staff of the commission on the Maina team.
“Maina has not a single seized asset he handed over to the EFCC, and if there are any of such, we would like to know the types of assets, the locations, the date of handing over and which officer signed the handing over document of the assets
“So, there can’t be any asset to be shared by the EFCC, and if there was any sharing, we would also like to know when, where, and who per took in the sharing from the EFCC”.
Asked why the EFCC vacated its earlier order declaring Maina wanted in 2015 as stated by the Comptroller General of Immigration, Mohammed Babandede,Magu denied the letter vacating Maina’s earlier order fo arrest saying that it was signed in December while he took over the EFCC in October of same year but did not instruct any Kabiru, a member of Maina’s Task Team from the EFCC  to sign such a leter and that he was seeing the letter for the first time.
In his own submission     on the controversy, Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun told the Committee that   Maina, did not receive salary from government after his disengagement as being alleged
She said that from the records of the ministry, there was no trace of any payment of salary to Maina after he was disengaged from service in 2013.
According to her, “We have looked very well and we have no biometrics of Maina, so there is no way he could have received salaries as being claimed
In his submission, the Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr Ahmed Idris, said that Maina was last paid salary in February, 2013.
According to Idris, from March, he was removed from the payroll so I don’t know where he was receiving the salary
“If there was any payment of salary to Maina, there should be pay slips and ‎other documentary evidences to support the payments as claimed.
I‎n his claim, Counsel to Maina, Mohammed Sanni Katu submitted that  here was  a judgment from the Federal High Court  that sets aside the warrant of arrest which led to his query and subsequent dismissal.
According to him,”So our position  that having set aside all those queries and dismissal, it means Mr. Abdulrasheed Maina should revert back to his earlier status and what is that earlier status?
The status is that, before he was dismissed, he was a civil servant and being a civil servant, the question can as well be raised if he is entitled to salary and the answer is yes, that as a federal civil servant, he entitled to his salary.
“At one point, efforts were made to calculate his salaries from March 2013 till date, perhaps if not for what has happened now, they would have paid him salary in October
So, we are talking on the premise of the dictates of the law and the law is made up facts and the facts are contained in the judgement of the Federal High Court”.

How Obama Caused The Slavery Trade In Libya Today

Reno Omokri, a former media to ex President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has blamed former President Barack Obama for the crisis in Libya which has culminated in the slave trade practice.
Reno Omokri reacts to the situation of slavery in Libya where sub-saharan Africans attempting to cross into Europe from Libya are sold into slavery.
He laid blames at the door steps of the United States of America due to its interventionist policies.
His post:
”When Gaddafi was in power, there was no slave trade of Black Africans in Libya. As a matter of fact Gaddafi gave financial aid to Black African nations and almost single handedly funded the fight against White minority rule in the then Rhodesia (renamed Zimbabwe) and against apartheid in South Africa (Google it. Even Mandela said so openly in America). Barack Obama staged his removal and now Black Africans are being sold in Libya and you think Obama is good and Gaddafi was bad? All over Africa, from Libya, to Egypt, to Nigeria, Obama intervened without caring what Africans really wanted and saddled us with incompetent regimes that are taking Africans backward. History will not be kind to Obama!”

Libya Slave Trade: “Celebrities Are Coming Out To Speak, Where Are Our Pastors?” – Daddy Freeze

Reacting to the current slave trade going on in Libya, OAP Daddy Freeze has called out Nigerian pastors for not speaking and standing up for our brothers over there when celebrities are doing so.
As usual, he also attached a verse from the Bible. Read below…

“I meant to say 29th of November, I’m so unhappy about what’s going on in Libya that I got the date wrong, please forgive me!

A minor attack on tithing and almost every pastor comes out to defend it.
A major attack on humanity and up until now I’m waiting for the first pastor to stand in condemnation, or put their resources together and make that difference.

One GO, they say owns 4 private jets, imagine how many of our brothers that could help bring home. If they could use church jets to buy ammunition, why can’t they use them to bring home our brothers?

Or are they implying that the lives of our brothers are worth much less than the guns that will kill them?

Celebrities are coming out to speak and stand up for our brothers, WHERE ARE OUR PASTORS??? Are they too busy advertising their next concert, or are they so preoccupied with filling their event centers this Sunday, that they can’t take a few minutes off practicing the speeches that will ginger 10 people to bring out =N=1Billion each, to remember the plight of the very brothers Jesus admonished us to keep?

Could the demeanor of these pastors be attributed to the fact that the refugees don’t have tithe cards?
I was traumatized last night, tormented by the gory image of the roasted cadaver that was once a brother of ours, where is the love; Is there any ‘humanity’ left in ‘human beings’?

I thank the federal government for rising to the occasion and bringing home our brothers, some returned tonight, as reported by captain @usoroessien.

It’s a damn shame to us all, if the government proves more caring and compassionate that the so called ‘house of God’.

Lets remember, true Christianity is about love, NOT MONEY! ~FRZ

◄ Luke 10 ► [25] On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” [26] “What is written in the Law?” he replied. [27] He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[a]; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b]” [28] “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”

54 babies born HIV positive in Nasarawa-official

Dr Zakari Umar, the Executive Director of Nasarawa State Aids Control Agency (NASACA), said 54 babies delivered between January and September in the state tested positive to HIV.
Umar made this known on Thursday in Lafia in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Umar said out of the 1,194 pregnant women who keyed into the Prevention of Mother- to- Child Transmission (PMTCT) HIV programme in 2017, 54 of them transmitted the virus to their babies.
He explained that cases of transmission recorded were due to lack of adherence to medical advice and refusal to take prescribed drugs.
“Science has proven that it is possible to totally eradicate mother to child transmission of HIV if pregnant women adhere to medical advice and take their drugs regularly.
“Those women whose babies tested positive must have refused to comply with their drug regimen during pregnancy,” Umar added.
According to him, the case of mother to child transmission of HIV in the state has reduced over the years due to sensitisation and other preventive measures taken by stakeholders.
He said available records from 2016 indicated that 66 babies were born with HIV.
Umar attributed reduction in transmission of the disease to babies in 2017 to sensitisation and adoption of the PMTCT programme.
He also advised members of the public to avoid acts that would make them vulnerable to the virus, adding “the virus is not yet over hence the need for people to take preventive measures.”
The executive director urged people to get tested to enable them know their status in order to curtail spread of the disease.
He said the state had domesticated the anti stigmatisation law aimed at protecting those living with the virus.
Umar, therefore, advised those being stigmatised on the account of the disease to always seek redress at the appropriate quarter. (NAN)

Delete your Twitter - UK MPs tell Donald Trump

UK MPs have attacked Donald Trump's sharing of far-right posts, accusing him of fuelling hate and calling for a planned state visit to be cancelled.
One Tory MP said the world would be "a better place" if Prime Minister Theresa May could persuade the US president to delete his Twitter account.
The US president retweeted three videos posted by a British far-right group.
When Mrs May said he had been "wrong" to do so he said she should focus on combating terrorism in the UK.
Home Secretary Amber Rudd said she hoped Mrs May's criticism "would have some impact on the president" - but she rejected calls for his state visit to be called off.
She said an invitation "has been extended and accepted" but the "dates and the precise timings have yet to be decided".
She urged critics of the president to remember the importance of the transatlantic alliance to Britain, saying intelligence sharing between the two countries had "undoubtedly saved British lives".
"That is the big picture here, and I would urge people to remember that," she added.
But she repeated Downing Street's condemnation of the US president, saying he had been "wrong" to share the posts by far-right group Britain First.
She said the UK government would "not tolerate any groups who spread hate by demonising those of other faiths or ethnicities".

Responding to a call by MP Peter Bone for the president to delete his account, she said: "It's interesting to note [Mr Bone's] advice regarding Twitter accounts - I'm sure many of us might share his view."
Former Conservative minister Tim Loughton said if Twitter was "genuine in its commitment to fight hate crime online" it would delete the US president's account.
Ms Rudd replied: "I am sure that the chief executive of Twitter will have heard the interesting suggestions from (Mr Loughton) and we will leave it to them to decide what action to take."
Several MPs called for the state visit to be cancelled, with former Labour cabinet minister Yvette Cooper saying Britain could not "simply roll out a red carpet and give a platform for the President of the United States" to "sow discord in our communities".
Veteran Labour MP Paul Flynn said if Mr Trump should be "charged with inciting racial hatred" if he comes to the UK, a view echoed by fellow Labour MP Naz Shah.
Mr Trump earlier hit back at Downing Street's criticism of his tweets, saying: "Don't focus on me, focus on the destructive radical Islamic terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom."

An unnecessary controversy

By Anthony Zurcher, North America reporter
It's clear at this point that Donald Trump won't let a perceived slight or criticism go unanswered - even if it's from a supposed friend. Even if it's from the leader of the president's closest international ally.
So shock isn't exactly the right word to describe the reaction to Mr Trump's initially botched attempt to tell Theresa May to, in effect, mind her own business. This is just another example of the US president's self-described "modern-day presidential" use of social media, where Twitter is a cudgel for score-settling no matter the diplomatic cost.
When Mr Trump assumed the presidency, one of the first foreign dignitaries he received was Mrs May, and it appeared they formed a quick bond - briefly holding hands as they walked past the White House Rose Garden. Those bonds will now be tested in a spat over a few morning retweets of inflammatory videos.
It's a wholly unnecessary controversy, but the international consequences could be all too real.

The US and the UK are close allies and often described as having a "special relationship". Theresa May was the first foreign leader to visit the Trump White House.
The videos shared by Mr Trump, who has more than 40 million followers, were initially posted by Jayda Fransen, the deputy leader of Britain First, a group founded by former members of the far-right British National Party (BNP).
Ms Fransen, 31, has been charged in the UK with using "threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour" over speeches she made at a rally in Belfast.
Several leading UK politicians have criticised the president for retweeting her posts, as has the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, who said it was "deeply disturbing" that Mr Trump had "chosen to amplify the voice of far-right extremists".
Communities Secretary Sajid Javid said Mr Trump had "endorsed the views of a vile, hate-filled racist organisation that hates me and people like me", adding: "He is wrong and I refuse to let it go and say nothing."
London Mayor Sadiq Khan repeated his call the state visit to be cancelled, saying: "It beggars belief that the president of our closest ally doesn't see that his support of this extremist group actively undermines the values of tolerance and diversity that makes Britain so great."
In hitting out at Mrs May, Mr Trump first tagged the wrong Twitter account, sending his statement to a different user with just six followers. He then deleted the tweet and posted it again, this time directing the message to the UK PM's official account.
After already condemning Mr Trump's actions on Wednesday, Brendan Cox - whose wife, MP Jo Cox, was murdered by a right-wing extremist who shouted "Britain first" before committing the act - told the US president to focus on problems in his own country.

What did Trump retweet?

The first video purportedly shows a "Muslim migrant" attacking a young Dutch man on crutches. However, the claim in this tweet appears to have little substance.
A spokesperson from the Dutch Public Prosecution Service told the BBC that the person arrested for the attack "was born and raised in the Netherlands" and was not a migrant.
The Dutch embassy in Washington DC confirmed this on Twitter.
The second video retweeted by Mr Trump shows a man smashing a statue of the Virgin Mary.
This video was uploaded to YouTube in 2013. The man in the clip says: "No-one but Allah will be worshipped in the land of the Levant," which could place him in Syria.
The third video originates from the riots that took place in Egypt in 2013, and shows a man being pushed from the top of a building in Alexandria. In 2015, those involved in the incident were prosecuted, and one man was executed.

Media captionBrendan Cox, the husband of murdered UK MP Jo Cox, said Mr Trump was "legitimising hatred"

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said on Wednesday that Mrs May and other world leaders knew that "these are real threats that we have to talk about".
"Whether it's a real video, the threat is real," she said.

What other reaction has there been?

Mr Trump's actions on Wednesday were criticised by both Democrats and Republicans.
Republican Senator John McCain said he was "surprised" at the president's tweets.
Meanwhile, Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah said that Mrs May was "one of the great world leaders", adding that he had "incredible love and respect for her".
"We all need to unite ourselves, all decent people of the world, against the menace of terrorism."
