Three-week-old baby girl hospitalised after father’s slap – Police
A man, Edet Asuquo, has fled his home in the Idi Araba area of Lagos State after he nearly killed his newborn baby, Gift Asuquo.
Little Gift’s offence was that she was a girl, as 32-year-old Edet was alleged to have said he didn’t see her usefulness and threatened to kill her.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Edet and the baby’s mother, Rosemary Kingsley, both indigenes of Calabar, Cross River State, were only dating when the woman became pregnant.
She was reported to have packed into the suspect’s apartment on Ayinla Street after she was delivered of the baby.
However, Edet, a bus conductor, was said to have been angry that his lover gave birth to a girl and not a boy as he expected, which resulted in frequent disagreements between them.
On January 10, 2018, the baby was reported to be hungry and was crying when the father allegedly slapped her.
She was said to have convulsed due to the severity of the assault and was rushed to a medical centre for treatment.
Some of the hospital workers reportedly called the attention of the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender to the matter, and the agency contacted the police at the Itire division.
PUNCH Metro learnt that by the time the police got to the house, the suspect had fled.
A social worker with the OPD told our correspondent that blood spurted out of the baby’s nostrils as a result of the injury she sustained, adding that the mark of the slap was visible on her cheek.
She said, “We gathered that the two lovers were not married. She sold plantain chips, while the man was a bus conductor. They just met on the road and agreed to date each other. She became pregnant a few weeks into the relationship. At the initial stage, the man didn’t want to take responsibility for the pregnancy. But after she was delivered of the baby, he bowed to pressure and allowed both mother and child to move in with him. They lived in a shop.
“According to the woman, the baby was crying that morning while the father carried her. He started abusing the baby and saying a girl would not be useful to him because he wanted a boy. She said he slapped the baby. At that point, the baby started convulsing. It was the neighbours who compelled him to get drugs for the girl’s treatment. She was later taken to a hospital. The mark of the assault is visible on the child.
“When the matter got to our attention, we mobilised policemen to the house. However, we were told that he had escaped. The police have promised to get him arrested for assaulting the innocent baby. Even the mother was being maltreated by Edet; he seized her phone.”
The Director of the OPD, Mrs. Olubukola Salami, said the agency would ensure that the suspect faced the full wrath of the law.
“The rising trend in child abuse is alarming. Children are vulnerable and should be protected, not pummelled. The Lagos State Government will ensure the rights of children are protected and perpetrators who violate these rights, irrespective of status, are brought to book, no matter how long it takes,” she added.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, confirmed the incident, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, had ordered that the suspect be arrested.
He said, “The case was reported. The man slapped the baby and fled. We are looking for him. In fact, the CP, who detests abuse of children and domestic violence, has ordered the Divisional Police Officer to get him arrested. What he did is highly reprehensible and has no place in a modern society.”

Lagos – A marriage of nine years was dissolved on Monday in Lagos after Mr Michael Ayinde, a 39-year-old man, had taken his wife, Glory, to court over her penchant for unbridled procreation.
Mr Akin Akinniyi, the President of Igando Customary Court in a Lagos suburb, said that it was obvious from available testimony and the respondent’s refusal to appear in court that the marriage had hit the rocks.
“Throughout the duration of this case, the respondent (Glory) refused to honour court processes.
“Therefore, the court has no choice than to dissolve the marriage; the court hereby pronounce the marriage between Mr Michael Ayinde and Mrs Glory Ayinde dissolved.
“Both parties henceforth cease to be husband and wife and are free to go their separate ways without any hindrance or molestation,’’ Akinniyi ruled.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr Michael Ayinde had earlier told the court that his wife, whose name he gave as Glory, enjoyed “giving births at will’’ without consideration for the prevailing economic situation.
According to him, Glory has had six children within the nine-year duration of their marriage.
“Before I married Glory, I warned her that I needed only two kids irrespective of their gender so that I can afford their upkeep. She agreed only for her to discard the agreement after marriage.
“My Lord, my wife wants to kill me with children. She is giving birth to children like rabbits. In nine years, she was delivered of six babies.
“She was sacked from her workplace just because she gets pregnant immediately after she resumed from maternity leave,’’ Ayinde said.
He said that he had sold his cars and some of his property to cater for the children.
“After she had the fourth baby, I begged her to go for family planning, she refused.
“I had to force her to the hospital for a family planning device but she went secretly to remove it without my consent.
“Some months later, she went to her parent’s place and sent me text message that she was pregnant.
“She did not return home until after delivery and also did the naming of the baby in her parent’s place,’’ Ayinde also told the court.
He said that on Dec. 24, 2016, Glory left home again for her parent’s place where she called again that was pregnant and that she would be back after birth.
“Last month, she called me that she had delivered and named the baby, David.’’
The father of six also alleged that his wife was not washing his clothes and her children’s clothes.
Ayinde pleaded with the court to dissolve the marriage so that the estranged wife would not continue to have more children. (NAN)
Man stabbed to death over chicken in Calabar
CALABAR—A fight over chicken at a political gathering in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, has claimed the life of a young man, Eyo Nsa, who was reportedly stabbed to death by members of a cult —King Crackers.
It was gathered that a councillorship aspirant in Calabar South visited the ward’s secretariat at Gibson to signify his intention to contest and went with refreshment for members.
An eyewitness, Sylvester Effiom, said: “One of the boys was sharing the chicken, but the deceased (Eyo Nsa) didn’t wait for them to get to him before dipping his hand into the tray to take a portion, which infuriated the people at the gathering.
“An argument ensued, which turned into a fight. In the process, the deceased ran into their house and came out with a machete. As he was running towards one of his assailants, he was stabbed on the upper side of his ribs, fell and started bleeding profusely.
“But because it was very late, there was no vehicle to convey him to the hospital so he bled to death on the spot.”
Another source, who pleaded anonymity, alleged that the deceased “was a leader in the cult (King Crackers) and has refused to relinquish the position he was occupying.
“The squabble presented a perfect opportunity for them to kill him since he refused to hand over to another person.
“The chicken sharing, which caused the quarrel, was just a smokescreen. The main issue was a leadership position in the cult group; they know better. He was part of them. He was killed because he refused to hand over to someone else.”
When Vanguard visited the area yesterday, residents had deserted their homes for fear of being arrested for questioning.
Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident, saying they were trailing the suspect.
Court Remands Man For Alleged Defilement Of 12-year-old Girl
A Karshi Grade I Area Court, Abuja, on Thursday ordered the remand of 27-year-old Friday Bamidele, for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl. The judge, Mr Aliyu Kagarko, ordered the remand of the defendant in prison pending the conclusion of police investigations and result of medical test conducted on the victim. Kagarko adjourned the case until Jan. 29 for ruling on the bail application of the defendant. The defendant, a resident of Jikwoyi, Abuja, is standing trial for alleged defilement of a minor. The prosecutor, Mr Mahmud Ismai’la, had told the court that Okechukwu Ikechukwu, of Phase 1, Jikwoyi, who is a neighbour of the defendant, reported the incident to Jikwoyi Police Station on Jan. 9.
Ismai’la told the court that on the said date, the defendant forcefully dragged the victim into a bush close to their residence and allegedly defiled her. He said the defendant also threatened to kill the victim if she reported the incident to anyone. Ismail’la informed the court that immediately after the act, the teenager however, reported the incident to her parents and she was immediately taken to the General Hospital Nyanyan for necessary medical examination.
The defendant denied committing the offence.(NAN)
Man Sent To Prison For Biting Off Wife’s Nose

A trader at Idumota, Lagos Island, Lagos, Adebiosu Remi, 41, has been arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate Court for allegedly fighting his wife, Bukola Kehinde, 37 and in the process bite off her nose with blood gushing out for allegedly refusing to stop government work and wearing skimpy dress to work.
A police source said that the timely intervention of neighbours who rushed to pick the cut off nose and rushed the victim to the nearest hospital where doctors allegedly stitched the nose back saved the victim from losing her nose.
The incident, according to the Police occurred on 3 January, 2018 at 21 Edumare Street, Lagos Island,Lagos where the couple resides.
The accused was arrested by the police at Adeniji Adele Division, Lagos Island following a complaint by his wife and charged before a Tinubu Magistrate Court on a three-count charge of felony to wit, biting the complainant which caused her grievous bodily harm and threatening to kill her and pour acid on her body.
Police Counsel, Nurudeen Thomas informed the court in charge No A/03/2018 that the accused committed the offence at their residence at Edumare Street, Lagos Island.
Thomas told the court that the complainant reported to the Police that trouble started between her and the accused shortly after she secured a job with a government ministry in Lagos.
Thomas said that the complainant stated that her husband later started complaining that he was not comfortable with the kind of tight dress she puts on to work and told her to stop the ministry work and join him in his trading.
He stated that the complainant said that her husband fought her and bite off her nose to disfigure her and stop her from continuing the ministry work when she refused to succumb to his demand, adding that her husband also promised to pour acid on her to kill her.
Thomas said that the offences the accused committed were punishable under sections 247(1), 246(a) and 232 of the criminal Laws of Lagos State,2015.
The accused pleaded guilty to count one and two of the charges and pleaded not guilty to count 3 which accused him of threatening the life of his wife.
Chief Magistrate K.B Ayeye adjourned the case till 12 February, 2018 for trial and ordered that the defendant be kept at Ikoyi Prison till the adjourned date.

Ibrahim Umar, a 25-year-old kidnap-for-ransom kingpin, said he had not only killed over ten of his victims in recent times but also drank their blood raw.
Umar made this chilling revelation yesterday when the police paraded him along with 15 others. He added that he hunts and kills soldiers to get their arms and uniforms for operations whenever he was in need of the items.
The suspect, a vicious and notorious kidnap/armed robbery kingpin, who said he has been in the business for over two years, was arrested alongside his three gang members in the forest and towns along Abuja-Kaduna, and Abuja-Suleja-Minna highway by men of the F-SARS Special Tactical Squad attached to Operation Absolute Sanity.
The husband of two wives and father of two, who gave his nickname as “Oro”, told journalists at Sabon Wuse Divisional Office, venue of the parade, that he had made fortunes worth millions of naira from the atrocities he carried out on the highway in the past two years.
The arms and ammunition recovered from the gang included five AK47 riffles, 15 7.62 X 39mm AK47 ammunition, two swords and cutlasses, four pairs of suspected fake military uniform and mobile phones.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), who paraded the suspects before newsmen, gave their names as Mohammadu Auta, a.k.a Babawuro, aged 27; Musa Usman, 25 years old and Abdullahi Abubakar, aged 28. Umar’s gang, according to Moshood, “is the most vicious and notorious syndicate of kidnap-for-ransom gang arrested by the police in the recent time. The gang was defeated and its members captured after an intense gun battle that lasted more than five hours between the F- SARS Special Tactical Squad attached to Operation Absolute Sanity.
“The gang leader confessed to have killed personally more than 10 people, including those that he killed and still collected ransom from their families. He also confessed to have sucked the blood of most of the victims after killing them. He was identified by some of the victims rescued from their captivity by the police in the forest, “Moshood added.
Twelve other suspects were also arrested in the act of laying ambush to kidnap people returning from Christmas and New Year holidays on Kaduna-Abuja road and Minna-Suleja-Abuja road.He said they were apprehended in their various criminal hideouts in the forest and other locations along the Abuja-Suleja-Minna highways for kidnapping, armed robbery, murder and multiple rape cases.
“All the suspects arrested confessed to their various crimes. The suspects will be arraigned in court for prosecution on completion of investigation, while investigation is being intensified to arrest other members of the gang still at large,” he said.

A driver simply identified as Samson has been arrested for killing his boss and dumping his body in a septic tank at Ekiadokor area of Ovia North East local government area of Edo State. Two other suspects were also arrested in connection with the killing.
It was learnt that Samson sold the vehicle of his boss to an herbalist at Ovbiogie village and told the victim’s children that their father was kidnapped.
Police sources said Samson informed the victim’s children who are based abroad that the supposed kidnappers were demanding for N2 million ransom.“Samson collected some money from his boss’s children with a promise that their father would be released soon,” the sources said.
The lid blew on the suspect when some relatives visited the residence of the deceased and discovered the decomposing body inside a septic tank. The driver was arrested by policemen from Ekiadolor Division while trying to collect the balance of N500,000 for the car he sold to the herbalist.
Meanwhile, a nursing mother, Janet Usen, and three others have been arrested by the police for allegedly abducting a four-year-old, identified as Gideon along Atamunu Street in Calabar, the Cross River State capital. The suspects are presently in detention at the Airport Police Division, Atimbo.
It was gathered that they had abducted the child and taken him to a house in Atimbo. A neighbour had suspected that strange children have always been brought into the house and tipped off the community leaders, who confronted them and they confessed that the child was abducted. The police were then called in to intervene.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Irene Ugbo, who confirmed the incident, said four suspects have been arrested and investigation was ongoing to know the depth of the matter.
“I have asked the people in charge to brief me on the matter so that we can give you more information but for now four suspects have been arrested and investigation is ongoing to ascertain the depth of the matter, “she said”.

The police in Anambra State have reportedly launched a manhunt for a retired boxer, identified only as Everitus, for allegedly beating his wife, Fidelia, to death.
It was learnt that the ex-boxer attacked the wife during a disagreement at their home in Uli, in the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Fidelia had demanded money for Christmas food from the husband when an argument ensued between them.
As the argument degenerated, Everitus was alleged to have beaten the wife to a pulp.
Our correspondent was told that immediately the woman gave up the ghost, the ex-boxer fled the community.
The matter was said to have been reported to the police at the Ihiala division as some youths vented their anger on the suspect’s country house in Amamputu village, in the same council area.
A source, who said the incident happened on Monday, December 25, explained that the mob set Everitus’ country house ablaze.
He said, “The man and the wife had been married for some time now. They usually have disagreements. The man was a retired boxer who has become a pastor of a charismatic church.
“The wife, who is a trader in Ekeagbagba Market, had asked him for money that she wanted to prepare food for Christmas.
“That was what started the fight. He beat her to death over the issue. The man is on the run, while the case has been reported to the police.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nkiruka Nwode, said the report had yet to get to her office.
Australian Woman Escapes Death Penalty In Malaysia
Maria Elvira Pinto Exposto, a 54-year-old Australian woman escaped the possibility of a death sentence on Wednesday after she was found not guilty of drug trafficking by Malaysia’s High Court.
Exposto was arrested at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in December 2014 for smuggling more than a kilogramme of crystal methamphetamine.
Her lawyers previously told the court that she was caught during a stopover while carrying the drugs from Shanghai to Melbourne while an unwitting pawn in an online romance scam.
Exposto was unaware that she had been tricked by her supposed online lover, a U.S. soldier who identified as “Captain Daniel Smith.”
Malaysia’s drug laws ensure the execution by hanging of anyone caught with more than 50 grammes of a narcotic.
In November, the Malaysia parliament passed an amendment approving the removal of the mandatory death penalty for drug offences giving judges full discretion in sentencing, Malay Mail online reported.
Exposto’s lawyers were not immediately available to comment on whether their client would be covered by the amended law because she was charged but not convicted when it was passed in November.
To date, three Australian nationals have been executed in Malaysia because of drug offences – Kevin Barlow and Brian Chambers in 1986 and Michael McAuliffe in 1993 for drug offences, The Guardian reported.
China's 'Super Vulgar Butcher' activist Wu Gan gets eight years
A prominent Chinese human rights activist, best known by the online alias Super Vulgar Butcher, has been jailed for eight years for subversion.
Wu Gan has been held since 2015, when authorities arrested or questioned hundreds of lawyers and activists.
Mr Wu said he planned to appeal against the sentence, seen as the harshest against a human rights activist since the crackdown began two years ago.
He was known for online campaigns designed to humiliate authorities.
Convicting Mr Wu, the court in Tianjin said he was "dissatisfied with the current system of governance, and that gradually produced thoughts of subverting state power".
The court also accused said he "spread fake information" and "insulted others online".
Mr Wu's took up the causes of those he saw as victims of state power, including the case of a rape victim who had killed her assailant, a Communist Party official, by stabbing him with a fruit knife.
He also fought for justice on behalf of four men who claimed that they had been wrongfully jailed for murder.
His activism has had a playful or mischievous tone. He once photo-shopped the faces of three Henan province officials on to pigs and posted the pictures on social media with the caption: "World's Most Wanted; three fat pigs."
And at the court that jailed the four men for murder, he set up two large banners, one showing a photo of the chief judge with a Hitler-style moustache above a written message to the judge to name his price for a bribe.
More than 200 people were detained in the so-called "709 crackdown" in 2015, including civil rights lawyers and human rights activists.
Law Student In Prison For Allegedly Stealing N1.5m
An Osun state Magistrate court has remanded a 45-year-old, female law student of Adeleke University, Amah Yangu Rose, in prison for allegedly robbing two of N1.5m.
According to The Nation, the accused was said to have committed the offence in May 30, 2017 at Aisu area, Ede.
Information contained in the charge revealed that she obtained N710,000 from one Ogunniyi Gbadebo and another 800,000 from one Giwa Ayodeji promising to supply them 633bags of Dangote cement and failed to do so.
The offence, is said to have contravened Section 419 of the criminal code. The court confirmed her guilty of the offense and ordered her to refund the money.
When the case came up in Ede Magistrate Court on Monday, the prosecutor, Mr. Samson A., informed the court that the accused person promised to bring N500,000 to the court, but failed to do so.
The prosecutor told the court that the accused sent N50,000 as against the N500,000 she promised, noting that she did not send any representation to the court.
The prosecutor, however, urged the court to issue bench warrant against her and her sureties to appear in court.
Mrs. Ogunniyi Omoniyi, who held the brief for the complainant, said the accused was granted long adjournment to enable her pay the amount she promised. She urged the court to uphold the prayer of the prosecutor and issue bench warrant against the accused.
The presiding magistrate, Mr. Asimiyu Adedayo, said that the accused person has no reason to absent in court without sending representative.
He thereby revoked the bail granted the accused and ordered that she should be arrested and remanded in Ilesa prison till January 25, 2018.

A court last month increased Pistorius’s sentence for murdering Reeva Steenkamp to 13 years in the latest stage of a long court battle since his trial in 2014.
Pistorius shot dead Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine’s Day in 2013 when he fired four times through the door of his bedroom toilet, later saying that he thought she was an intruder.
“We respect the law. It is Oscar Pistorius’s constitutional right to appeal his sentence. The law must take its course,” Tania Koen, a lawyer for the Steenkamp family, told AFP by email.
Pistorius was originally convicted of culpable homicide — the equivalent of manslaughter — but his conviction was upgraded to murder on appeal.
Pistorius also tried to take the murder conviction to the Constitutional Court, South Africa’s highest tribunal, but it refused to hear the matter.
The year before he killed Steenkamp, Pistorius became the first double-amputee to race at the Olympics when he competed at the London 2012 games.
He suffered minor injuries this month in a brawl over the use of a public phone at the jail where he is held outside the capital, Pretoria.

As the debate on the Nigerian Muslim lady, Firadau Amasa, who refused to remove her Hijab at the Call to Bar ceremony on Wednesday continues, Nigerian lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, this afternoon, shared this photo of a Nigerian nun who had to remove her religious attire for that of the legal profession. He argues that the nun could have also added her 'headgear' to her legal attire since she wants to respect her husband, Jesus Christ.
Inibehe also reacted to the tweet by the president of the Nigeria Bar Association, Abubakar Mahmoud, that the controvery against the use of Hijab is needless and will be addressed. Using the picture of his daughter which he, Mahmoud posted, Inibehe pointed out to the NBA boss that Sharia courts and the Nigerian courts in general does not allow women wear trousers during practice. Look at this photo shared by the NBA President. Her daughter wore a trouser; look at the type and colour of her shoe; look the size and colour of her hijab.
No lawyer in Nigeria, not even in the so-called Sharia States in the North, can appear before a Judge with any of those. In Nigeria, female lawyers do not wear trousers.
Those relying on the statement of the NBA President should ask questions. It will be ridiculous for us to mend our Rules and Conventions simply because of what is obtainable elsewhere.
When this lady applied for American visa, I will like to know whether she had her hijab on while taking photographs and during the screening? Mr. A. B. Mahmoud SAN should tell us.
Islam forbids women from touching men who are not their husbands. But don't we have female nurses and female security personnel? Do they not interact with the opposite sex in the course of their work?
Hijab as I understand, is only worn by female Muslims to shield them from unnecessary attention. It is just a protective apparel. The wig also serves same purpose. Hijab is just a piece of fabric that is made and sold to those who want to wear it.
No woman was born with a hijab. If you want to join a profession like law, you must be ready to abide by its tenets. You cannot expect the profession to adjust its rules just to suit your religious beliefs.
I am not scared of being labelled or insulted by the Social Media Hisbah Police who have taken it upon themselves to attack anyone who disagrees with their opinion. I do not care what you think of me. I don't have respect for religious bigots.
If you have followed me for long, you would have known that I am far more critical of questionable things and practices that I find in Christianity.
Labelling me anti-Islam is not just nonsense but certified nonsense.

Court sentences man to death for rape of housemaid
A special court has sentenced an Indian businessman and his domestic help to death for the brutal rape and murder of a 25-year-old housemaid in their home in Noida city on the outskirts of the national capital in 2006.
The court of India’s Central Bureau of Investigation pronounced the quantum of punishment, a day after holding businessman Maninder Pandher and his aide Surinder Koli guilty in the crime they had committed in their house in Nithari village in Noida.
This was the ninth of a total of 16 cases in the macabre serial killings that took place in Nithari in 2005 and 2006.
While Koli has been found guilty in the earlier eight cases and awarded death penalty, Pandher was convicted in three cases and sentenced to death in two.
Handing down the punishment in the latest case, special CBI judge P.K. Tiwari said both Koli and Pandher were involved in the rape and murder of housemaid Anjali in 2006, and they deserved to be punished in the strictest manner.
“Koli had dragged the victim inside the house and made her unconscious, raped her, and then ate her flesh, therefore death sentence is the only option in law.
“Pandher was also involved in the crime. Both will be hanged till death,” the court held.
Anjali, who used to work as a housemaid in Noida, was reported missing in October 2006.
Her killing came to light after Koli’s arrest in December that year when police discovered skulls and bones of 16 persons, mostly children, near Pandher’s house.
The CBI took over the case from the local police subsequently and charge sheets have been filed in 10 out of 16 cases.
The other cases are under trial.

Ruling on an appeal for a re-run of the first round of elections held on Oct. 10, the apex court said evidence provided by the appellants was insufficient to grant their prayers.
Opposition Liberty Party (LP) and the ruling Unity Party (UP) lodged the appeal after the Board of Commissioners of the National Elections Commission (NEC) dismissed their petitions for lack of evidence.
LP led by Mr Charles Walker Brumskine, who came third in the Oct. 10 elections with less than 10 percent of the votes, took the lead in protesting the election results.
The party claimed that the exercise was marred by massive irregularities and fraud, and thus fell short of the minimum standards of credibility.
In its 4-1 ruling, the Supreme Court acknowledged that the first round of presidential and legislative elections were, to some extent, characterised by fraud, irregularities and disregard of the New Elections Law.
But the court held that the appellants failed to establish that such malpractices were on a scale that warrants a rerun of the entire elections.
Associate Justice Philip Banks read the ruling on behalf of the five-man Supreme Court Bench, according to local media.
However, as precondition for the run-off election, the court ordered NEC to fully comply with the standards of publications of the voter register known as the Final Register Roll (FRR) in accordance with law.
It also mandated the electoral body to conduct a full cleanup of the FRR to have it comply wit the provision of the law.
The FRR is to be available in published hard copies to all Election Magistrates and polling places across the country in accordance with law prior to the conduct of the run-off election.
NEC was also ordered not to allow anyone whose name is not in the FRR to vote during the runoff.
The apex court noted that the FRR is the only electoral document that speaks to the eligibility of voters.
“Poll watchers, who did not register at their places of assignment and those whose names are not in the FRR should not be allowed to vote,” the court ruled.
It also prohibited the Chairman and members of the Board of Commissioners of NEC and other employees of commission from public utterances and pronouncements relating to any matter that may emanate from the run-off.
Meanwhile, NEC is expected to announce a date for the second round, which would be between the two leading candidates, football icon George Weah and incumbent Vice President Joseph Boakai.
OMG!!! Woman inserts hot knife into her niece’s private part
A woman, identified as Mrs. Esther Abgundu, a native of the Gwer Local Government Area of Benue State, has been accused of inserting a hot knife in her five-year-old niece’s private parts.
According to a petition by a non-governmental organisation, the Justice Development and Peace Commission of the Ekiti Catholic Diocese, the act was carried out on November 26.
The petitioner said it was informed that the offence of the victim was that she ate the food of the suspect’s baby.
The petition read in part, “On November 26, 2017, the victim was babysitting the baby of the respondent (Abgundu) and in the course of feeding the baby, the victim ate a spoon of the baby’s food.
“This annoyed the respondent and she inserted pepper into her niece’s private parts.
“The respondent further put a knife in the fire and inserted the hot knife into the victim’s private parts. She also beat up the girl and told her not to cry.”
The JDPI indicted the police in the petition signed by its Director, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Akingbade, which was sent to the National Human Rights Commission.
“The respondent was released barely few hours after her arrest and boastfully roamed the streets of Ijelu-Ekiti freely as if nothing happened.
“We hereby urge you, as bastion of hope and front runner in protection of human rights, to use your good offices and intervene in this matter of cruelty against the victim by ensuring that the respondent is brought to book to serve as a deterrent to whoever still engages in acts of inhuman and degrading treatment to others, especially to children.”
Abungun could not be reached as of press time.
But the Police Public Relations Officer in Ekiti, Alberto Adeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said the police were still investigating the incident.
He said, “The parents of the victim have been invited to the police headquarters in Ado Ekiti.
“We will ensure justice in the matter. Anyone indicted in the investigation will be prosecuted.”
Court orders temporary Forfeiture of Lagos Director’s N28.5m, property
Justice Rilwan M. Aikawa of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Thursday, December 7th, ordered the temporary forfeiture of the sum of N28, 500, 000 (Twenty-eight Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira) and several houses allegedly belonging to a Director of Accounts, Lagos State Ministry of Public Works Corporation, Anifowoshe Alade, to the Federal Government.
The judge gave the order following an ex-parte application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) pursuant to Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act No. 14, 2006 and Section 44 (2)(b) of the Constitution.
In an affidavit in support of the application deposed to by Zayyanu Halliru, an investigator with the EFCC, it was stated that the respondent, Alade, while holding the position of Director of Finance, incorporated a company called MAJ Anny International Limited.
It was further stated that Alade, who is a Director in the company and the sole signatory to its account, used his position and company’s account to divert public funds meant for Public Work Corporation, Lagos State.

The deponent, among claims in the affidavit, also said: "I know, as a fact, that we traced to the respondent the sum of N106, 095,960.00 (One Hundred and Six Million, Ninety Five Thousand, Nine Hundred and Sixty Naira) which sums he fraudulently stole from Public Works Corporation, Lagos State to his personal account No. 0015893001 domiciled in Guaranty Trust Bank and converted same to his personal use.
"I know as a fact that we traced to the respondent the sum of N223,373,475.00 (Two Hundred and Twenty Three Million, Three Hundred and Seventy Three Thousand, Four Hundred and Seventy Five Naira) which sums he fraudulently stole from Public Works Corporation, Lagos State to Maj Anny International Limited, being his company account domicile in Zenith Bank.”
It was further stated that the sum of N28, 500, 000 had so far been recovered from the respondent.

Moving the application today, counsel to the EFCC, Rotimi Oyedepo, said the money as well as the properties sought to be attached were suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities.
“They are stolen, diverted and retained by him from the Lagos State Public Works Corporation,” he said.

In his ruling on the application, the judge ordered the temporary forfeiture of the money as well as the properties. The forfeited property are: “Six flats of three- bedroom, six flats of two- bedroom and six flats of one- bedroom at Adewale Osiyeku Street, Offin-Ile Igbogbo, Ikorodu, Lagos State. Others are: Four flats of three- bedroom duplex at 6, Tunde Gabby Close, Dopemu Area, Pako Bus Stop Agege, Lagos State; one plot of land at Queen’s Garden Estate, Off Lagos-Ibadan Expressway; a semi-detached three-bedroom flat and one unit of three- bedroom Terrance at Cranbel Court, Citiview Estate Arepo, Ogun State.
Justice Aikawa directed the EFCC to notify the respondent to appear before the court within 14 days why the property should not be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government.
The judge also directed the Commission to publish the order in a national newspaper so as to allow the respondent or anyone who is interested in the property to show cause within 14 days why the final order of forfeiture of the property should not be made in favour of the Federal Government.

Zimbabwe: Child, 10, Cries for Father Who Raped Her - Fiend Jailed 20 Years
A Harare court was recently left in shock after a ten-year-old girl wept for her father as he was jailed for raping her.
The minor had narrated a sexual relationship with her father, leaving the court in shock.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the girl's identity, was slapped with twenty years imprisonment for rape.
Testifying, the victim wept and insisted to the court that she was in love with her father.
"I love him. He proposed and I agreed before we discussed how we would sleep with each other. I loved it when we had sex and I enjoyed it," said the girl, speaking in camera.
During the trial court, heard that her own mother turned her Domboshawa home into a brothel, hiring men for young girls and exposed the child to sexual abuse for a long time.
The family resides in Domboshawa where the victim's father operated a college. His daughter is a grade four student at the institution.
The father, who denied the allegations, was convicted of rape but the state did not pursue other charges including incest and sex with a minor on him.
Magistrate Noel Mupeiwa said if that had been considered, the rapist would have faced over 50 years imprisonment.
Prosecutor Timothy Makoni proved that the relationship with the girl had gone beyond that of the father and daughter.
The affair ended recently after the man's wife caught her husband raping their daughter and reported him to the police.
"What we have before this court is a taboo, not only prohibited by religion or the society, but also prohibited legally," said Makoni in aggravation.
"It is aggravatory that a father would propose to his own blood and goes on to ask if she enjoyed after every sexual encounter and then ask if they could repeat the act," he added.
Magistrate Mupeiwa said the fact that it was a consensual relationship falls away considering that the victim is a minor.
"Carry your cross," he told the father.
"Now you are talking about God in mitigation, giving reference to some bible verses but I will leave the process of God to himself and I will deliver my sentence as a man of flesh.
"There are indications that you used protection yet you have other two sexual partners. You regarded your daughter as a wife exposing her to sexually-related diseases that could be in your love triangle. That, on its own, is aggravating."
