Woman dragged out of car, raped in front of husband
The incident, according to police, took place Sunday night in Sector 56 of Gurugram on the outskirts of New Delhi.
Police said they had arrested four people in this connection.
A police official said: “on Sunday night a woman, her husband and brother-in-law were returning from a function in a car.
“When they stopped near the business park tower, the woman’s husband got out of the car to use the toilet.
“Suddenly two cars stopped near them and four men came out and dragged the woman out of the car.
“One of the men took the woman and raped her while others held her husband and her brother-in-law at gunpoint.”
Reports said before running away, the men warned the woman and her husband against reporting the incident to the police.
This is the latest incident of rape horror that emerged in the state.
Recently two incidents of young girls being raped and killed were reported in Haryana.
Sexual attacks on women and girls in India put a question mark on their safety and efficiency of police force in the country.
In December 2012, a fatal gang-rape of a medical student in New Delhi brought spotlight on crimes against women in India.
The incident saw huge protests and resulted in new anti-rape laws in the country. However, brutal sexual attacks against women continue to be reported across India.
60-year-old herbalist rapes woman with Down’s syndrome
An herbalist, Tajudeen Akintoye, is cooling his heels in a cell at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for taking advantage of a woman with Down’s syndrome, Rachael, in Itele, in the Ado Odo Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Akintoye, a popular herbalist in the community, sneaked into the victim’s parents’ house while her parents had gone to the farm.
He was said to have undressed Rachael and was sleeping with her when her parents arrived and caught him in the act.
The matter was reported at the Itele Police Station as the 23-year-old Anambra State indigene was taken to a hospital for tests.
Rachael’s father, Leonard Onuzulike, said the incident happened around 11am on Monday.
He said, “She developed the problem about 22 years ago when she was an infant. She had gone into convulsion and we took her to a hospital where the doctors said she had the problem. She cannot walk on her own and her speech drawls. But when we talk to her, she understands and responds, though not coherently.
“So, on Monday, my wife and I left her at home to go to the farm. The farm is just a stone’s throw to the house. And within 30 minutes, we were done.
“But on getting home, I was shocked to see him on top of my daughter. He was stark naked and he had removed her dress as well. We apprehended and handed him over to the police, who detained him.”
Onuzulike said his daughter was taken to a medical centre where she was examined before a doctor confirmed that there was penetration.
He, however, lamented that on Wednesday, the police gave him a form to take to the Ota General Hospital for another round of tests.
“When we got to the hospital, the doctor did not conduct any examination. He just asked her some questions and filled in her responses. He didn’t perform any test like the first hospital and I hope it is not a ploy to destroy the case,” he added.
While wondering the reason for the delay in the prosecution of the suspect, Racheal’s father alleged that the police at the Itele division asked him to provide a vehicle to convey the suspect from the station to the command headquarters at Abeokuta.
Onuzulike alleged that the officers threatened to release the suspect if he didn’t make the arrangement on time, saying they feared he could die in custody.
A police source at the Itele division said 60-year-old Akintoye, during interrogation, confessed to the crime, blaming his uncontrollable libido.
“He said he didn’t know what came over him and that he just couldn’t control his sexual urge which pushed him to enter the house and sleep with the girl. I wondered why he couldn’t go to a brothel and why it had to be such a helpless girl. He is a wretched man and the police have been feeding him for the three days he had spent in the cell,” the source said.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the police had received the result of the test, adding that the matter had been transferred to the SCIID.
He said, “A case of rape was reported and the suspect was arrested by our men at the Itele division. The victim was taken to a hospital for medical test because we need a doctor’s report to prosecute the suspect. The case is not what can be handled at the divisional level. They had to transfer it to the SCIID and they cannot do that without getting the medical report. That was what the DPO was waiting for yesterday (Wednesday). They got it this morning and the matter has been transferred to the SCIID.
“The incident happened in the interior of Ota. They could have a challenge of getting vehicles to transport them to Abeokuta. But that does not mean they will kill the case over issues of transportation. The police cannot prosecute the case without the complainant being present when it is being transferred because he needs to know where the matter is being transferred to.”
The state Commissioner for Health, Babatunde Ipaye, did not pick his calls.
He had also yet to respond to a text message on the allegation of medical tests not being carried out on the victim at the Ota General Hospital.
Court sentences man to death for rape of housemaid
A special court has sentenced an Indian businessman and his domestic help to death for the brutal rape and murder of a 25-year-old housemaid in their home in Noida city on the outskirts of the national capital in 2006.
The court of India’s Central Bureau of Investigation pronounced the quantum of punishment, a day after holding businessman Maninder Pandher and his aide Surinder Koli guilty in the crime they had committed in their house in Nithari village in Noida.
This was the ninth of a total of 16 cases in the macabre serial killings that took place in Nithari in 2005 and 2006.
While Koli has been found guilty in the earlier eight cases and awarded death penalty, Pandher was convicted in three cases and sentenced to death in two.
Handing down the punishment in the latest case, special CBI judge P.K. Tiwari said both Koli and Pandher were involved in the rape and murder of housemaid Anjali in 2006, and they deserved to be punished in the strictest manner.
“Koli had dragged the victim inside the house and made her unconscious, raped her, and then ate her flesh, therefore death sentence is the only option in law.
“Pandher was also involved in the crime. Both will be hanged till death,” the court held.
Anjali, who used to work as a housemaid in Noida, was reported missing in October 2006.
Her killing came to light after Koli’s arrest in December that year when police discovered skulls and bones of 16 persons, mostly children, near Pandher’s house.
The CBI took over the case from the local police subsequently and charge sheets have been filed in 10 out of 16 cases.
The other cases are under trial.
Court sentences three men to death for rape, murder of 15-year-old girl
Court sentences three men to death for rape, murder of 15-year-old girl
The men in their 20s had in July 2016 raped the teenager in Kopardi village of Ahmednagar district, about 302 km east of Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra.
“All three convicts in the Kopardi rape and murder case have been given death penalty today by Ahmednagar district court,” a court official said.
“The conviction was announced by the court on 18th of this month.”
The victim, a class 8 student, belonged to the upper-caste Maratha community while the accused men were low caste Dalits, formerly known as untouchables.
The incident triggered massive outrage across the state with thousands of Marathas taking to the streets in protest.
In December 2012, a fatal gang-rape of a medical student in New Delhi brought to spotlight crimes against women in India.
The incident saw huge protests and resulted in new anti-rape laws in the country.
However, brutal sexual attacks against women and girls continue to be reported across India.
On October 11, India’s Supreme Court ruled that sex with a wife below 18 years of age amounts to rape, a landmark judgment aimed at stopping child marriages.
“If a man has sexual intercourse with a wife who is below 18 years, it is an offence. The minor wife can complain against the husband within one year,” it said.
The court also said that the exception in Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code, which did not criminalize sex with a minor wife aged between 15 and 17 years, violated the Indian Constitution.
“Exception in rape law is discriminatory, capricious and arbitrary… It violates bodily integrity of the girl child,” it ruled.
India has 23 million child brides. But rape and child marriage laws disagree on consent age.
The Indian Penal Code defines sex with a girl below 18 years, even with her consent, as a crime. However, an exception is made if the girl is his wife and between 15 and 17 years.
The court’s order came in the wake of a petition by Independent Thought, a non-governmental organization, that had flagged the contradiction in law.
